Tristan Abbott (Grayce B. Kerr Fellow) started his PhD at MIT in fall 2016 and is currently studying tropical convection with Professor Timothy Cronin. Until the spring of 2016, Tristan was an undergraduate computer science major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he developed his interest in numerical and mathematical modeling of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Eric Beauce(Theodore R. Madden Fellow) joined the Program in Geophysics at MIT in fall 2016, after getting a master’s degree in physics from the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon in France. Under the supervision of Professor Rob van der Hilst, Beauce is studying the seismicity of the Western Alps (France/Italy), which involves the development of earthquake detection methods adapted to this region.
Patrick Beaudry(Sven Treitel Fellow) started his PhD studies in fall 2016, and is combining experimental petrology and stable isotope geochemistry to investigate volatile cycling in subduction zones, working with Professors Timothy Grove and Shuhei Ono. He studied Earth Sciences at McGill University as an undergraduate student and earned a master’s degree from Queens College, City University of New York.
Ekaterina Bolotskaya(M. Nafi Toksöz Fellow) began her PhD studies in fall 2016 working with Professor Bradford Hager. She is interested in the theory of fracturing and friction which may help us understand the origin and the features of a fault’s motion during natural and induced earthquakes. Bolotskaya has also finished art school and in her spare time enjoys drawing.
Caue Borlina(Grayce B. Kerr Fellow) started his PhD in planetary science at MIT in the fall of 2016. He is working with Professor Benjamin Weiss studying the evolution of the Earth’s magnetic field, focusing on when it started and how it varied during the first billion years of the Earth. He is also interested in habitability across our universe. Before coming to MIT, Borlina completed his bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan.
Michaela Fendrock(Norman C. Rasmussen Fellow) is a first-year MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student working with Professor David McGee’s paleoclimate and geochronology lab studying marine geology and geochemistry. Fendrock graduated from Wellesley in 2014 with a double major in geosciences and astronomy.
Manuel Flores-Torrez(Shrock Fellow) is a fifth-year PhD student in geophysics. His work combines computational modeling and analysis of massive seismic data sets with the aim of constraining the physical mechanism of intermediate-depth and deep earthquakes and their relationship to complex subduction zone processes. Before coming to MIT, Manuel completed his master of science and undergraduate degrees in physics at the Universidad de los Andes and the National University of Colombia, respectively.
Sam Goldberg(Patrick Hurley Fellow) is a second-year PhD student in geology. He uses numerical modeling and observations of the present world to understand how Earth’s surface drainage has changed over geologic time. He also studies the climatic setting of early animal evolution using clumped isotope paleothermometry.
Ziwei Li (Warren G. Klein Fellow) is a second-year PhD student focused on atmospheric science. He is currently working with Professor O’Gorman on quantifying the dynamical contributions associated with precipitation extremes in the changing climate. Before joining EAPS, he was an undergraduate in physics and atmospheric sciences in Peking University.
Megan Lickley(Callahan-Dee Fellow) joined EAPS in 2015 and works with Professor Susan Solomon on climate change, energy policy, and risk analysis. Lickley holds a bachelor of science in mathematics and statistics from the University of Acadia, Canada, and a master’s in technology and policy from MIT’s Engineering Systems Division.
John Lin(Norman C. Rasmussen Fellow) joined EAPS in fall 2017, having earned an undergraduate degree at Princeton University where he majored in computer science. Lin is studying tropical meteorology with Professor Kerry Emanuel, specializing in hurricane prediction and predictability.
Clara Maurel(Whiteman Fellow) is a second-year PhD student working with Professor Ben Weiss on the magnetic properties of asteroids. Maurel has a master’s in aeronautic and aerospace engineering from the Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO), Toulouse, France.
Meghana Ranganathan(Norman C. Rasmussen Fellow) joined EAPS in fall 2017 to study atmospheric science and is a member of the Ravela Group. For her undergraduate degree, Ranganathan majored in mathematics at Swarthmore College, specializing in applied mathematics. She has also been a guest blogger for Scientific American.
Raphael Rousseau-Rizzi(J.H. and E.V. Wade Fellow) has always been curious and fond of learning—that curiosity being fostered by observing the outdoors while sailing and hiking. He pursued his interest in science first in aerospace engineering, and then with a master’s in atmospheric sciences. Rousseau-Rizzi started as a PhD student in EAPS in fall 2016, studying tropical cyclogenesis with Professor Kerry Emanuel.
Tajana Schneiderman(Whiteman Fellow) is a second-year planetary sciences graduate student working with Professor Sara Seager on the detection of exoplanets around the nearest stars. In particular, she is interested in the distribution of volatiles in protoplanetary disks and their relationship with solar system abundances. In her free time, Schneiderman enjoys reading, backpacking, and rock climbing.
Kasturi Shah(Frederick Middleton Fellow) began her PhD in September 2017, working with Professor Susan Solomon. Before coming to MIT, Shah studied physics at Princeton University and then did research for a year at Climate Central and at Columbia University. Kasturi enjoys rowing, mountaineering and making art.
Catherine Wilka(John H. Carlson Fellow) is a third-year PhD student interested in climate physics and chemistry. Working with Professor Susan Solomon her research is focused on chemical changes in the stratosphere due to the monsoon and the influence of volcanoes. In her free time, Catherine is learning to sail on the Charles River and enjoys sampling the local Cambridge culinary scene.
Jeehyun Yang(Whiteman Fellow) came to EAPS in the fall of 2016 after earning a bachelor’s degree in resource engineering at Hokkaido University, Japan. Yang studies the early Earth and planetary atmospheres from the viewpoint of physical chemistry and spectroscopy. His faculty advisor is Shuhei Ono. Yang is excited to have started playing ice hockey since arriving at MIT.
