The end of another academic year gives us the chance to look back at our students' achievements both inside and outside the department—with awards and honors not only from MIT but also from scientific organizations.

Graduate Students

Patrick Beaudry

received an EAPS Award for Excellence in Teaching, in recognition of graduate student teaching assistants in the department who have been selected by faculty and students to have met the highest levels of performance.

Christine Y. Chen

received the MIT Larry G. Benedict Leadership Award and was featured in the National Geographic Kids Almanac 2020.

 

Jane Chui (ERL)

received an AGU Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the AGU Fall Meeting 2018 in Hydrology.

Christina Hernandez

was recognized as an MIT Graduate Woman of Excellence, in recognition of exemplary leadership through example and action, service to the Institute, dedication to mentoring, and drive to make changes to improve the MIT student experience.

Meghan Jones

was selected as one of seven Grand Prize winners for the 2018 AGU Data Visualization and Storytelling Competition. She also received an AGU Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the AGU Fall Meeting 2018 in the category of Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology.

Ziwei Li

received an AGU Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the AGU Fall Meeting 2018 in Atmospheric Sciences.

Hannah Mark 

received an AGU Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the AGU Fall Meeting 2018 in the Tectonophysics section.

Clara Maurel

received the Stephen E. Dwornik Planetary Geoscience Best Graduate Oral Presentation Award from the Planetary Geology Division of the Geological Society of America, and was granted the Amelia Earhart Fellowship from Zonta International.

Kelsey Moore

received an EAPS Award for Excellence in Teaching, in recognition of graduate student teaching assistants in the department who have been selected by faculty and students to have met the highest levels of performance.

Gabriela Serrato Marks

was recognized as an MIT Graduate Woman of Excellence, in recognition of exemplary leadership through example and action, service to the Institute, dedication to mentoring, and drive to make changes to improve the MIT student experience.

Maya Stokes

was recognized as an MIT Graduate Woman of Excellence. In addition, she received an EAPS Award for Excellence in Teaching, in recognition of graduate student teaching assistants in the department who have been selected by faculty and students to have met the highest levels of performance. 


Undergraduate Student Awards

Sheila Baber ’21

was recognized as one of five who won a NASA internship at Langley Research Center.

Apisada “Ju” Chulakadabba ’19

received the W.O Crosby Award for Sustained Excellence
In recognition of achievement, both academic and intellectual, as well as general contributions to the EAPS Department.

Megan Goodell '19

received an EAPS Award for Excellence in Teaching, in recognition of graduate student teaching assistants in the department who have been selected by faculty and students to have met the highest levels of performance.

Charlotte Minsky ’20

received the EAPS Achievement Award, in recognition of a junior from across the EAPS disciplines who has distinguished themselves through a combination of high GPA, focused course work, and leadership within the department.

Emma Rutkowski ’19

received the Christopher Goetze Prize for Undergraduate Research, in recognition of innovative experimental design, care in data collection, and sensitive application of results to research problems.

Amanda Vanegas ’22

received an MIT First Year Student Award for Outstanding Research. The prize recognizes a high level of research, in addition to a willingness to lead and help others to understand scientific concepts.

Lily Zhang ’22

received an MIT Outstanding New Leader Award. This award honors up to two students in their first or second year at the Institution who show leadership promise. Recipients are students who have made exemplary contributions to a student organization, living group, department, lab, dorm, initiative, campaign, international project, or team and have helped that group and/or effort grow through their participation. This individual does not necessarily hold a leadership position and may be an undergraduate or graduate student.

was awarded one of nine 2018 Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Marine Microbial Ecology.

Jimmy Gasore PhD '18

was awarded the 2018 Rossby Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation in the EAPS Program in Atmospheres, Oceans and Climate.
