Stay Connected & Get Involved

The Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) is the place at MIT where scientists of many disciplines come together to study the Earth, Planets, Climate and Origins of Life. We are dedicated to hard, quantitative science, academic rigor, hands-on training and big data.  As a result of EAPS research, we now better understand the science and consequences of climate change, air and ocean pollution, extraction of Earth’s resources, and escalating risks from natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and hurricanes. And we know more every day about our neighbors in and beyond our solar system.

The goal of EAPS is to create a vibrant learning environment that prepares students with the leadership and creative thinking skills they require to undertake the basic discovery research that is needed to both expand our knowledge and to help address some major global challenges. But sustaining this environment is expensive. Your support is needed to ensure we continue to attract top students and faculty, and to provide the rigorous training required to prepare tomorrow’s scientific leaders and innovators.

Our future depends on it.

How you can help

We rely on gifts from alumni/ae and friends to fuel EAPS education and research. There are a number of ways you can participate.  Support a graduate student by giving or endowing a graduate fellowship in someone’s honor, help us build an existing fellowship fund or donate to the EAPS Discretionary Fund or another fund that subsidizes EAPS student and faculty needs. Better yet, establish your own unique giving opportunity to create a lasting legacy at MIT.

Contact Angela Ellis, EAPS Senior Development Officer (aellis@mit.edu or 617 253 5796) for more information and to discuss how you can realize your own philanthropic vision.

Thank you for your support. Every gift makes a difference!

Urgent Need

MIT has an extraordinary, time-limited opportunity to play a central role in this historical scientific initiative to discover habitats and signs of life outside of our solar system. Our goal is to raise $1,000,000 by April to build one new SPECULOOS (1-meter) telescope by fall of 2017. We already have one potential donor at $600,000, leaving just $400,000 left to raise! Can you help? To accelerate this exoplanet research and ensure MIT can join the SPECULOOS consortium, please consider making a gift to the SPECULOOS project. Call Angela Ellis at 617-253-5796 or email aellis@mit.edu for information.
