Title: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Addressing Systemic Racism in STEM.

Abstract:

STEM fields tend to lack diversity, especially racial diversity. The less diverse a field, the greater the reliance on stereotypes and implicit biases, which in turn disproportionately impacts marginalized groups such as people of color, women, and LGBTQ+. Systemic racism exists within the larger system of implicit biases that are prevalent in society and academia. Progress towards diversification can only come with a concerted shift in mindsets and a deeper understanding of systemic racism, especially in predominantly White fields. This session will provide insights and guidelines on advancing diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, with a focus on better understanding and addressing systemic racism.
