Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
Charge to the EAPS Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
The aim of the EAPS Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (DEI-C)—which will be refined through input from the committee and the community—will be to envision, coordinate and accelerate action toward making EAPS a place where people of all backgrounds and identities feel welcomed and supported and are treated with respect, and where our exploration of Earth and other planets is informed by and mindful of a wide range of perspectives and lived experiences.
The EAPS DEI-C will:
Identify priorities and goals for EAPS action on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI),
including recruitment, retention, well-being and achievement of members of underrepresented groups across all levels of EAPS; inclusion and representation in the department’s research, education, and administration; and K-16 outreach efforts aimed at broadening representation in Earth science.
Establish short- and long-term action plans, and identify strategies and needs, including the budget required, for carrying them out, taking into account existing recommendations and data from the previous Diversity Council, the 2023 Task Force, the EAPS DEI Action plan, and recommendations by MIT groups and committees listed in the MIT ICEO scorecard.
Establish practices for gathering input from the EAPS community and from experts on DEI efforts; in fall 2020, plan an EAPS DEI Symposium to communicate priorities and goals, gather feedback, and generate community involvement in DEI action.
Establish expectations for measuring and communicating progress toward goals.
Ensure coordination and communication of DEI and outreach efforts across the
department, including work by TIDE, WIXII, and the Education Office.
Regularly share its work with and seek feedback and input from the EAPS community.
Coordinate with School of Science and Institute DEI efforts.
