topography of Mars

Mars Global Topography

The topography of Mars was mapped in 1999 by the Mars Orbiter Lasar Altimeter, an instrument on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. Warm colors represent higher elevantions, and cool colors lower. You can see massive volcanoes, a canyon that runs nearly the width of the United States, and outflow channels that carried water across the surface early in Martian history when the planet had a warmer climate. Mosaic of the Moon

This mosaic picture of the Moon was compiled from 18 images taken by Galileo's imaging system during the spacecraft's flyby in 1992. The north polar region is near the top part of the mosaic, which also shows Mare Imbrium, the dark area on the left; Mare Serenitatis at center; and Mare Crisium, the circular dark area to the right.
