The goal of researchers in the geophysics program is to understand the interactions among the physical and chemical processes, occurring over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales, that lead to the rich behaviors of a variety of geosystems. Utilizing sophisticated instrumentation, including Global Positioning System (GPS) arrays and portable digital seismic networks, our geophysicists obtain and interpret observations in such places as the Tibetan Plateau, New Zealand, and South Africa. We also rely on data from the scientific community, which we analyze in our state-of-the-art laboratories. As leaders in the field, EAPS geophysicists provide important global insights on issues such as petroleum reservoirs, groundwater flow, climate, and the earthquake cycle.
