Interests
Prof. Shim's group is studying the structure and chemical composition of Earth’s lower mantle based on laboratory measurements for materials at high pressure and high temperature by using a third generation synchrotron facility allows the measurement of X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy for materials at in situ conditions. They demonstrated that the upper/ lower mantle boundary at 660-km depth is due to a phase transition in a major upper mantle mineral and that lower mantle minerals are stable at the pressure and temperature conditions of the bottom of the lower mantle. Their developing Raman spectroscopy techniques will enable them to measure vibration spectra of materials at in situ high pressure and high temperature.
