density gradients from the SPICE experiment

Density Gradients at Depth

With a goal of better understanding turbulent mixing, modeling the stirring of waters with the temperature and salinity of the Mediterranean Salt Tongues at the depth of 1000 m. off the coast of North Africa results in the pattern of this graphic. These numerical simulations complement the observational campaign of the North Atlantic Tracer Release Experiment. Blue represents lower densities; red, higher densities. Strait of Gibralter Solitons

Three solitons, large pulses of water, produced by the tidally driven eastward flow through the Strait are visible. They form at the interface between the less dense Atlantic water and the more dense Mediterranean water at a depth of about 60-80 meters. © Lunar and Planetary Institute.
